“Nearly 2,000 Filipino evacuees came into the American lines following the invasion of Leyte Island in the Philippines. Some had not eaten for two or three days and were in a bad condition. They said that the Japanese had taken their food and in some instances their clothing. Ample supplies of food were made available to the evacuees as soon as they reached American lines.”
